Course Description: Are you prepared for life after high school?! It is necessary for students to understand and be able to complete the requirements for entrance into college and the workforce, as well as to be prepared to meet the requirements of life after graduation. Topics of study include a self assessment, resume and cover letter, interviewing, college/career research and planning, applications, portfolio development, time management, goal setting, study skills, and life after graduation. An opportunity will be offered for students to talk with people involved in careers of their choice. Students will develop a portfolio for high school, college, and career use. This is a project based, student driven course.
Course Objectives:
The overall objective of this course is to prepare students for life outside of high school.
· Complete several self assessments and evaluations to better understand one’s self and where they fit in based on their personality, skills, and likes/dislikes.
· Develop a career and/or college plan
· Identify and practice successful interviewing skills
· Design and develop a resume, cover letter and portfolio
Required/Optional Materials as Appropriate:
Class Modalities/Alternative Learning Strategies:
This course is project based and will be facilitated by your instructor and class/online discussion. There are many hands-on activities, small group exercises, guest lecturers, videos, field trips and computerized systems used to enhance the learning experience.
Required Readings, Presentations, Written Assignments, etc.:
Class Participation/Professionalism: Regular class attendance is expected and necessary for success. There will be many supplemental activities (problem solving, small group exercises, class discussions, guest lecturers, videos, computer projects, etc) to the curriculum which is essential to overall learning. In terms of professionalism, as this is a business class, you will be held to the expectations and standards of the business world of work. Remember this in your actions, words and behaviors. Class participation and professionalism account for 30% of your grade.
Projects/Portfolio: Each unit will require the completion of at least one major project (resume, cover letter, self-assessment, etc) that will be included in your final portfolio. The great majority of these projects can and should be completed during the given class time. The portfolio is an instrumental tool that can be used for the college application process, as well as to set you apart from the crowd for internships and job interviews. The portfolio will be a representation of your experiences that will provide solid proof of what is on your resume and application. The development of your portfolio will take place over the course of the semester, with individual project grades along the way. You will be responsible for compiling all required elements for inclusion in your masterpiece of a portfolio which will be submitted as your final grade/assessment for this course. This portfolio and all projects to be completed will account for 70% of your grade.

**It is important to understand that there are some projects for this course which must be completed outside of class time and may require transportation provided by the student themselves and/or parent/guardians. These activities may include:
· A job Shadow at the students chosen location with instructor approval
· Community service/volunteer work
· College visit
